The author and illustrator sums up this unique book: "I wanted this coloring book to be extra special.  I love history, especially all the little details that let you imagine what it would have been like to live back then, so I did a TON of research for each picture so they could be as authentic as possible.  For example, the ship in St. Margaret of Scotland's picture is inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry which depicts the Battle of Hastings, an important event in St. Margaret's life.  The herbs in St. Gertrude's garden at Nivelles are herbs that would commonly have been grown in a medieval monastery garden...For many of the pictures I went a step further and drew the whole thing in whatever art style was current at the time...Before I had always thought reading about the saints a bit dry.  They just seemed so impossibly holy that it was a bit intimidating and hard to relate to them.  But for the first time, now they actually felt like real people.  So I decided to present them in that light: not just focusing on what made them holy, but also who they were in a historical context and in what ways they were just like us."
