Saint Tarcisius, the boy martyr of the Holy Eucharist, was a twelve year old acolyte during the persecution of the Emperor Valerian in the mid third century. He served the Pope in Rome and died defending the Holy Eucharist from a mob who attacked him. Pope St. Damasus wrote a poem in his honor comparing him to Saint Stephen, the first martyr, as they both suffered martyrdom at the hands of a mob. Saint Tarcisius is the Patron of Altarboys and we honor him with this holy card that tells of his life and has a prayer asking his intercession to aid in fulfilling the duties of an altar server.
