In the first Christian centuries, the laity took part in praising God in the Divine Office in the canonical hours of the Church.  The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary, offers families an opportunity to return to that fervor and custom of praising God, uniting their prayers with Holy Mother the Church for the Sanctification of Sundays.  Venerable Abbot Dom Gueranger, O.S.B. said, "The Psalter was created by God for Him to be forever the 'authentic formulary of prayer'  With its thoughts and in its language, God has willed to be praised and honored.  The Psalms express the deep most delicate sentiments of the human heart and answer all our needs.  They served the saints in the Old Testament;  they served the Apostles and saints of all ages."

The book measures 4" x 6" and fits nicely in a purse.  It is 248 pages, printed in red and black ink, bound in soft blue leather, and has two ribbons for marking your place.  It is well formatted and easy to use.  The text is based on an edition published just after the English Reform Act of 185o which allowed Catholics to openly practise the Faith again.  It includes all the Gregorian Chant for the Little Office.  The meditations before each hour come from the mediaeval Mirror of Our Lady.  Scripture passages come from Bishop Challoner's version of the Douay-Rheims Bible.

St. Joseph's Press offers the truth, goodness, and beauty of our Roman Catholic heritage in a classical 1933 address by His Eminence Michael Cardinal Faulhaber, Archbishop of Munich, to his diocese when the values of the Faith were about to be tested by the rising Nazi government.  Reprinted from an article which appeared in the January/February 2001 issue of The Catholic Hearth magazine.  An excerpt:

I.  Thou shalt value thy life and make good use of thy time!

Life given at birth is something precious in the sight of God...  We may not fritter away our life thoughtlessly, disgrace it by sin, squander it in dissipation, bury it alive through slothfulness, nor throw it away by suicide.  Life is not a dream, not a play nor a carnival frenzy; life is a mission, a duty, a responsibility...

The Incredible Story of the Song of Three Shepherds

The Incredible Story of The Song of Three Shepherds by James Hardiman

The Song of Three Shepherds by James Hardiman is a classic for those who know the Love Story from Heaven on the Fatima children well.  This book tells the whole story from the history of the village beginning in 1158 and takes us into the 20th century.  You are not just reading the story but become a part of the story as you enter into a Catholic culture of the early 1900's and meet the many folks involved and what happens to them and how the grace of God affects each one of them.  You also see how much the Mother of God loves us to come and offer us a true Peace Plan from Heaven.  This book is as engaging as it is inspiring and cannot easily be put down as you look forward to the next chapter.

St. Paul the Apostle told Timothy to 'Attend unto reading', (Tim.4,8). Even though Timothy being a Bishop, was greatly occupied with the care of his flock, still St. Paul the Apostle desired him to attend to the reading of holy books, not in a passing way but daily reading.  St. Alphonsus in his Meditations and Readings, Volume One, (Advent, Christmas and Epiphany) stated," the reading of pious books is the Spirit of God, that fills the soul with holy thoughts and good desires."  One keeps to the presence of God throughout the day and virtue abounds.  Therefore, St. Joseph's Press hopes to restore the past time of the Family Reading Hour by offering you this book for a time of enjoyable and memorable reading with your family.   Just like the American  poet, Longfellow in his poem, The Children's Hour, describes the joy of his children to hear another story by their father, so your family will look forward to another story that keeps Christ presence always with us throughout the day.
