St. Louis IX Holy Card

This beautiful holy card of St. Louis IX of France features a vintage image of St. Louis and a selection from instructions to his son on avoiding mortal sin and staying in a state of grace.  St. Louis IX is a patron saint of France and of the Third Order of St. Francis.

St. Louis X's mother, Blanche of Castille who was regent until he came of age, loved him very much, but she told him, "I would rather see you dead at my feet than that you would ever commit a mortal sin!"  Louis IX never forgot these words and expressed a similar sentiment to his own son on the importance staying in the state of grace.  Louis IX was an obedient son who learned well from his mother the religious practices of daily recitation of the Divine Office and attending Holy Mass.  When he became king would bring a hundred or more poor into the palace  to feed them, often serving them himself.  He is an excellent example of devotion to Christian duty and treating all with kindness.  Louis IX was very pious and heeded the call of the Pope twice leading crusades to defend the Holy Land.  On the second crusade he succumbed to typhus and among the last words he imparted to his son are the exhortation to avoid mortal sin and stay in grace which is on the back of this holy card.

St. Filumena Holy Card

This large holy card of St. Philomena, or Filumena in the original Latin, features a vintage image of the saint with the Blessed Mother and Child Jesus.  On the back of this holy card is a prayer to Saint Filumena, the virgin and martyr, who is a great wonder worker for all who seek her aid, and the patron of infants, babies, and youth.

St. Philomena was a Greek princess who lived at the end of the 3rd century.  When she was only eleven she consecrated herself to Jesus, and therefore when she remained steadfast in her Faith against the wishes of the Roman Emperor Diocletian who wished to marry her, he subjected her to a series of tortures finally ending in her martyrdom.

In the 19th century an Oblate of Our Mother of Sorrows, a Dominican Tertiary at the blessing and instruction of her priest was privileged to to have St. Philomena reveal her life:  "I am the daughter of the king of a small Grecian State and my mother, too, was of royal blood.  They continually offered sacrifices to false gods to obtain a child.  We had in our family a doctor called Publius who was a Christian...Inspired by the Holy Ghost, he spoke to them of our Faith and made them this promise, "If you want a child, be baptized and embrace the religion of Jesus Christ."  They were instructed and were baptized along with a number of their courtiers.  A year later, on January 10th, I was Born and I was called Lumina because I had been conceived and born in the light of the Faith, to which my parents were now truly devoted.  Affectionately, I was called, Filumena - Daughter of Light, of that Light of Christ which dwelt in my soul by the grace I received in Baptism.  Because of my birth many families in the kingdom became Christians.  I grew up with the teaching of the Gospel printed deeply in my heart.  When I was five, I received for the first time Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist; and on that day was planted in my heart the desire to be united forever to my Redeemer Who is the Spouse of virgins.  When I was eleven, I consecrated myself to Him by vow."

St. Jerome Holy Card

Honor one of the four great Latin Doctors of the Church, St. Jerome, a monk and priest who lived during the 4th and 5th centuries when the Roman Empire was being overrun by hordes of barbarians.   Our St. Jerome card features a painting of him by the Venician artist Bellini and a short prayer plus some information about St. Jerome.  St. Jerome is the patron saint of librarians, translators, and scholars.

St. Jerome was commission by Pope Damasus to write a new and better translation of God's Sacred Word - the Holy Bible.  He is the father of the Latin Vulgate Bible which was the official bible of the Catholic Church from the 5th century to 1979.  He was a prolific writer of commentaries on the Bible, letters to the faithful, and a book, De Viris Illustribus, on Illustrious Men, about 135 ancient writers from St. Peter up through his century.

Pope Benedict XV's encyclical, Spiritus Paraclitus stated, "His voice is now still, though at one time the whole Catholic world listened to it when it echoed from the desert; yet Jerome still speaks in his writing, which 'shine like lamps throughout the world'. Jerome still calls to us."

Saint Charalambos Holy Card

St. Charalambos was a priest and bishop in the early Christian Church during the times of the Roman persecutions.  In 202 A.D. at the great age of 113, God visited St. Charalambos before his martydom and said to him"Come, Charalambos, thou art my friend, thou who hast endured so many evils for the glory of My Name, ask of Me what thou willest and I will grant it unto thee."  St. Charalambos then asked that wherever his relics reposed or his memory is celebrated for no harm to befall livestock and more importantly for no illness to befall men.  Our Lord agreed, saying: "I grant unto thee what thou hast asked, O generous athlete..."  During the persecution of Christians by the Emperor Septimius Severus, St. Charalambos at the age of 113 was brought before the Proconsul Lucian and condemned to be tortured and put to death.  During the tortures many of the onlookers including several of the Roman soldiers seeing his pleasant steadfastness, converted to Christianity and were then martyred as well.  Enraged by this Lucian and the military commander then took up the tools of torture only to miraculously suffer these tortures themselves.  Whereupon they both prayed for mercy, were healed by St. Charalambos and converted to Christianity as well.  Finally St. Charalambos was brought before the Emperor Septimus Severus where before death he was granted his request by God.

The St. Charalambos Holy Card was requested by a sheep rancher whose livestock were protected through intercession to the saint and wished to honor him.  The front of the holy card features an image of the Saint surrounded by afflicted people and animals while God grants him his request of aid.  On the back is a brief account of his life with his own word offering aid to all who honor his memory.

Saint Catherine Laboure Holy Card

This holy card of Saint Catherine Laboure, a Daugther of Charity to whom the Blessed Mother appeared and gave the Miraculous Medal, features an image from a vintage French holy card.  On the back of this holy card is a quote from St. Catherine and the Miraculous Medal prayer.

Catherine Laboure's mother died when she was only nine years old, so St. Catherine took the Virgin Mary to be her mother, and prayed daily that one day she would be able to see the Blessed Mother Mary.  In November of 1830 when she was a nun living in the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity in Paris, her guardian angel awoke her and told her to get dressed for the Mother of God was waiting for her.  With great joy Sister Catherine Laboure knelt before the Blessed Mother with her hands on the Virgin Mary's lap.  The Mother of God told her that she was entrusted with a mission from her Son.  She instructed St. Catherine in matters of faith and added, "The whole world will be upset by evils of every kind.  But come to the foot of this altar where great grace awaits all, whether they be great or little, who ask fervently and with confidence."  We honor St. Catherine Laboure with her own words inviting all of us to go into the chapel.

Act of Consecration to the Holy Ghost holy card

This extra large holy card features the classic image of Pentecost by the French painter Jean II Restout in 1732.  On the back is the Act of Consecration and brief reflection on its benefits.

On Ascension Day, Jesus said to the apostles: "But you shall receive the power of the Holy Ghost coming upon you, and you shall be witnesses unto Me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the uttermost  part of the earth.' When He had said these things, while they looked on, He was raised up: and a cloud received Him out of their sight....they entered into the upper room...persevering  with one mind in prayer with the women and Mary, the mother of Jesus...(Acts of the Apostles 1:8-14)

We, too, can prepare for the coming of Pentecost by praying the Act of Consecration to the Holy Ghost from the feast of the Ascension through Pentecost.  When such a consecration is made with a great spirit of faith, its effect may be most profound and introduces us to the indwelling of the Holy Trinity within us.  This Act of Consecration to the Holy Ghost can be renewed throughout the Pentecost season and like the Apostles, we can obtain many graces from it for our souls.

Saint Isidore the Farmer Holy Card

For all of God's people who live in the country far from the bustle of city life, we introduce to you the pious couple, St. Isidore and Bl. Maria, whose virtuous lives show us the Fear of God is the path to True Happiness.  St. Isidore and Bl. Maria happily accepted their path in life which God had chosen for them - Isidore as a farmhand and Maria as a maid.  They sanctified themselves in their humble life by seeing God everywhere, and filling their lives with prayer, praise of God, and prayer to the angels and saints whether toiling in the fields, visiting Church, or inviting those poorer than themselves to their home for a meal.  We ask their intercession to pray for us to trust in Divine Providence.  Saint Isidore is the patron saint of farmers.

Our Saint Isidore the Farmer and Blessed Maria de la Cabeza holy card features a image of the two from a beautiful painting by the 18th century Spanish artist, Mariano Salvador Maella.  On the back is a brief account of them as well as an aspiration or short prayer for their intercession.
