St. Anthony came from a noble Portuguese family and spent 10 years as an Augustinian before joining the Franciscans.  He soon became famous for his preaching because he was extremely good at explaining Scripture.  So much so, that St. Francis of Assisi asked St. Anthony to teach theology to the friars who wanted to become priests.  He taught and he preached throughout Italy and southern France.  Pope Gregory IX commissioned him for a collection of sermons, which led to Pope Pius XII making St. Anthony a Doctor of the Church in modern times.  His reputation as a finder of lost things also started during his lifetime.  Once, a novice stole the saint's psalter which contained all his notes for teaching classes.  When St. Anthony discovered it was gone, he prayed that it would be found and the novice was inspired to come back and return the book to him.

This holy card has two short prayers on the back.  One is written by the saint himself invoking the help of the Holy Spirit in understanding and growing in holiness.  The other is for finding lost articles.

Saint Benedict Prayer Card

All of Italy and the Mediterranean regions were overrun by hordes of pagans, the Church torn by conflict, everywhere was war, pillage, and violence among Christians and pagans alike, decadent and immoral living by most of the inhabitants and that is when Benedict, a young man withdrew from these anarchic times and retired to Subiaco, thirty miles from Rome where he gave himself to God.  He met Romanus, the monk, who directed him to a cave to be his home for 3 years as a hermit and brought daily provisions. It is from this lowly isolated cave that he grew in wisdom and grace before God. His holiness spread throughout the region and he is known as the Father of Christian Europe by the  Holy Rule Book he wrote -- living the monastic life of Ora et Labora that restored Christianity and maintained it through the centuries.

The Saint Benedict holy card features a reproduction of a 16th century German painting by the Master of Messkirck, while a prayer of Saint Benedict is on the reverse side.

St. Bernard, the 12th century Cistercian abbot of Clairvaux whose feast day is August 20th, is known as the Mellifluous Doctor of the Middle Ages for his sweet manner, few spoken words, and skill of getting to the heart of the matter.  He would read Holy Scripture while gazing out upon the French countryside and meditate on God's Word.  This enabled him to write on many subjects including the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Holy Name of Mary, St. Joseph, the Guardian Angels, ushering in many devotions popular to this day.

The St. Bernard of Clairvaux Holy Card features a beautiful vintage image from the late 1800's on the front of the card.  On the reverse side is an excerpt from St. Bernard on the Holy Name of Mary, beginning: In dangers, in doubts, in difficulties, Think of Mary, Call upon Mary. Let not her name depart from thy lips, never suffer it to leave thy heart.

Saint Catherine Laboure Holy Card

This holy card of Saint Catherine Laboure, a Daugther of Charity to whom the Blessed Mother appeared and gave the Miraculous Medal, features an image from a vintage French holy card.  On the back of this holy card is a quote from St. Catherine and the Miraculous Medal prayer.

Catherine Laboure's mother died when she was only nine years old, so St. Catherine took the Virgin Mary to be her mother, and prayed daily that one day she would be able to see the Blessed Mother Mary.  In November of 1830 when she was a nun living in the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity in Paris, her guardian angel awoke her and told her to get dressed for the Mother of God was waiting for her.  With great joy Sister Catherine Laboure knelt before the Blessed Mother with her hands on the Virgin Mary's lap.  The Mother of God told her that she was entrusted with a mission from her Son.  She instructed St. Catherine in matters of faith and added, "The whole world will be upset by evils of every kind.  But come to the foot of this altar where great grace awaits all, whether they be great or little, who ask fervently and with confidence."  We honor St. Catherine Laboure with her own words inviting all of us to go into the chapel.
